Cerro Castillo Trek: The Quieter Alternative to Torres del Paine (2026)

The Cerro Castillo traverse (Las Horquetas to Villa Cerro Castillo) is a 4-day, 3-night backcountry trek of roughly 51 km (32 miles) in Chilean Patagonia, about 60 km south of Coyhaique on the Carretera Austral. It's the wilder, quieter alternative to Torres del Paine — no refugios, genuine river crossings, and a high scree pass (El Peñón, ~1,450 m / 4,750 ft) — rewarded by the turquoise glacial Laguna Cerro Castillo beneath jagged basalt spires. The best season is December through March.

Cerro Castillo National Park protects a serrated massif that looks like a castle, hence the name. Where Torres del Paine has boardwalks, daily buses and crowds, Cerro Castillo has mud, marked-but-rough trails and, often, the lagoon to yourself.

Las Horquetas Traverse, Day by Day

  • Day 1 — Las Horquetas to Río Turbio (~12 km / 7.5 mi). A gentle valley walk in beside the Río Turbio to the first camp. Easy warm-up day.
  • Day 2 — Río Turbio to Campamento El Bosque (~13 km / 8 mi). The crux: climbing to Paso El Peñón (~1,450 m) over loose scree that can hold snow into early season. Steep and exposed in wind.
  • Day 3 — El Bosque to Campamento Porteadores, via Laguna Cerro Castillo (~14 km / 8.7 mi). The highlight — the turquoise glacial lagoon under the castle spires. Most hikers drop packs and side-trip up to the mirador.
  • Day 4 — Porteadores to Villa Cerro Castillo (~12 km / 7.5 mi). A long descent out to the village and the road.

How to Get There

Fly Santiago to Balmaceda (BBA) — about 2h20 — then transfer ~1 hour to Coyhaique, the regional hub and your last resupply. The northern trailhead at Las Horquetas is about 1.5 hours south of Coyhaique on the Carretera Austral (Route 7); the trek exits at Villa Cerro Castillo, so arrange a pickup or bus back.

Difficulty and Fitness Level

Harder than the W Trek. The terrain is rougher (loose scree, real river crossings, no boardwalks), there are no refugios — you camp and carry everything — and the weather is less predictable this far into Aysén. Paso El Peñón is the test: loose footing, steep, and fully exposed to Patagonian wind. Come with solid fitness and prior multi-day trekking experience.

Permits and Logistics

  • CONAF park entrance: ~CLP 19,000 (~$22 USD) for foreigners.
  • Reserve campsites in advance through the official park system (senderospncc.cl).
  • No porters on arrival — if you want carrying help, arrange it from Coyhaique before you start. [COMPLETAR: porter/arriero real desde Coyhaique + costo.]

Best Season

December–March, with January–February the peak. November often still has snow on El Peñón. Outside summer the pass becomes technical and crossings rise.

What to Pack

A −12 °C sleeping bag, a 4-season tent, trekking poles, and sandals for river crossings. Waterproof boots, gaiters, and a genuine rain shell are essential. Coyhaique is your last resupply — buy all food and fuel there.
